Sheffield’s finest, Rob Napier, is route setting in Boulders today and tomorrow, creating nine sweet new routes!
One of Britain’s top climbers, Rob is just back from a short trip to Hoy (on the Orkney Islands in northern Scotland), where he got up to some adventure rock routes a plenty. He’s happy to be back alive and pulling on plastic in Boulders...
Today Rob has set some new volumes with some technical routes around the 6a+ to 6c+range. For those of you who have fingers of steel and shoulders that can hook off down to your waist, then come and try the pumpy 6b to 7a+/ 7b routes, which are to come on the steeper lines. All of this, plus a bouldery 7c+ / 8a, or two. If that’s not your cup of tea, then you will find plenty of other cool and technical routes to do.
Please bear with us whilst there is limited disruption to some lines today and tomorrow, it’ll be worth it!
You will find Rob’s cool new routes on lines 32, 33, 34, 35, 52, 55, 56, 78 and 79. Please see the Boulders centre map below to check out where they are.

ROUTES
At Boulders we believe that our routes are the most important part of the centre. We have a massive number of climbing lines and we work hard to change them regularly, keeping them new, fresh and interesting.
Boulders indoor climbing centre is home to over 120 lines of climbing, covering over 2,000m2 of climbing surface, reaching heights of 12m. We try to to ensure there are at least 3 routes per line on every line so at capacity our maximum number of routes will exceed 360. We challenge anyone to climb them all before we get around to re-setting them!
We use a colour coding system that we hope ensures our routes are clear for everyone. This basically means we will (hopefully!) not set pink routes next to red routes (how annoying is that?) and other similar colours that will be hard to distinguish once they have been nicely chalked up. We also try to cater for people who are colour blind, but by the nature of what we do, this can be pretty challenging.
Our dedicated top roping area has a great range of grades for everyone and has large heater to keep you toasty during the cold winter months.
We like to keep mixing it up too, with constant route setting, that aims to have at least 50 new routes up per month.
To help make things interesting, we like to to have a liberal spread of volumes strategically placed all over the walls. We move these around regularly and this helps to change the dynamics of the lines and makes for much more interesting routes. In Boulders, all our routes and boulder problems include any volume or arete you can get your foot or hand on. We find this makes routes much easier to understand and can also create some really interesting ways to climb a route.
Occasionally we like to get our large swinging volumes out and set some nasty endurance-fest through the arches and we even have the odd dry tooling sessions too!
