Geckos' Holiday Camp (age 10+)
The Geckos' holiday camps are an intensive week that helps to develop advanced climbing techniques and fitness. This course is strictly available for those of who have passed their NICAS Level 3.
The Geckos' holiday camp is for young experienced climbers ready to take a step into the world of advanced techniques and lead climbing! Lead climbing is where the excitement is notched up a degree and takes a whole new set of skills to master. One of our instructors will be there to guide your child through it and ensure they are 100% safe at all times.
The holiday activities are great for those wanting to get ahead with their climbing and keep working towards the Boulders climbing badges. The week and day courses can be used to catch-up, revise, or start getting ahead of the syllabuses that are covered in the Gecko term time climbing clubs.
Skills your child will be learning whilst having fun in the Geckos' holiday camp include;
- Lead climbing and lead belaying safely and efficiently.
- How to assess the risks of lead climbing.
- Rope and equipment care and maintenance.
- Effective climbing communication.
When a child takes part in a Geckos' holiday activity, they will already have their NICAS Level 3 and will be ready to start NICAS Level 4 and 5. Geckos' holiday activities run every school holiday and over multiple activities and/ or term time courses. The child will work towards completing NICAS levels 4 and 5, as well as achieving Boulders climbing badges. NICAS levels 4 and 5 will take a long time to complete and only the best climbers will ever achieve NICAS level 5, as it requires the child to be proficient in extremely advanced climbing skills and techniques. We would normally expect a child to be involved with Geckos activities for at least two years.
On completing each NICAS level, the child will gain a certificate and will be encouraged to progress onto the next level. Along the way, there are lots of Boulders climbing badges to collect, so there's always plenty of rewards and short term goals to work towards.
