NICAS scheme.
1. How can my child get into climbing?
2. Enjoyed the Pumas Climbing Club. How can my child take it further?
- The first step is to join the kids' Learn to Climb courses, which run over the course of a academic half time, or for a whole week in the school holidays. This course will teach your child the basic skills needed to climb in a group safely and join the Spider Monkeys climbing club.
- Climbers need to be 8-years-old prior to starting the Learn to Climb course.
- The child will need a NICAS Level 1 & 2 logbook prior to starting the Learn to Climb course - these are available to buy from Boulders reception for £4.50 each.
- The second step is to graduate onto Spider Monkeys climbing club. Some climbers attend two Learn to Climb courses before graduating onto Spider Monkeys.
- Spider Monkeys climbing club runs over the course of an academic half term. Day and week-long camps also run during the Welsh school holidays.
- As climbers learn new skills and get better at climbing they can earn badges to show off their achievements. Each half term, climbers work towards earning a different badge.
- All badges are included in the cost of the club.
- Once climbers have collected all of the Spider Monkey badges and been awarded their NICAS Levels 2 & 3 certificates, the next step is to graduate onto the Geckos climbing club.
- To graduate from Spider Monkeys to Geckos climbing club, a child must attend a graduation. These are run as needed and run from 10am to 3pm.
- Prior to starting NICAS Level 3, the child will need a NICAS Level 3 - 5 logbook folder, these are available to buy from Boulders reception at £7 each.

Further FAQ’s3. What if my child misses a session?
- It's really important that the climber catches up with any activities that they might have missed and can attend alternative days to catch up.
- If a child misses a session, Boulders will make a space available on an alternate session of the same level in order to help the child catch up. The additional session will be provided free of charge and must be taken within 14 days of the missed session.
- If a child misses a large part of a course for medical reasons, provided medical evidence is provided, the following will apply:
a.
The child is removed from the course before the half way point; Boulders will provide a space on the same
level course in the academic half term immediately following the child’s full recovery. The space will be provided
free of charge.
b. The child is removed after the courses’ half way point and misses at least 3 consecutive lessons; Boulders will provide a space on a comparable skill level holiday activity day in the holiday immediately following the child’s full recovery. The space will be provided free of charge.
4. What if my child is struggling to get a specific badge close to the end of the half term?
- Our instructors will be keeping a close eye on everyone’s progression. If your child is struggling, they can attend additional sessions to catch up, or go onto a holiday camp after the course, so that they are ready for the next term. Additional sessions are chargeable on a session-by-session basis at £12 per person.
5. What if my child is over the age of 10?
- We find that once climbers reach the age of 10 that they learn the skills more quickly than younger climbers and can normally progress faster through the awards, especially if they can squeeze in extra climbing sessions. A short spell on the Spider Monkeys climbing club could see them graduating to Geckos very quickly.
6. Can my child attend extra clubs?
- If your child would like to do more climbing, they can attend additional classes. Each additional session is chargeable on a session-by-session basis at £12 per person. Booking in advance is essential.
7. Can my child just come to one session?
- The Pumas climbing club is set up specifically for one offs, or session-by-session climbing. Unfortunately, we cannot work towards NICAS, or club badges, on these sessions.
8. What is the Boulders climbing badge system?
- There are 24 Boulders climbing badges: 12 as part of the Spider Monkeys and 12 as part of the Geckos climbing clubs that recognise achievements in climbing, in much the same ways Cubs, Scouts, or Brownies have badges. Each half term, the Spider Monkeys and Geckos will work towards achieving up to two badges. It is normal for a child to achieve one Boulders climbing badge per half term.
9. What happens if my child doesn't get both the Boulders climbing badges in the term?
- Each half term is structured towards achieving up to two of the Boulders climbing badges. It is normal for only one badge to be achieved each half term. The climbing syllabus will repeat itself annually and as most children will attend either Spider Monkeys or Geckos for at least two years, there is always two chances to get both badges.
