Climbing Club

Stuck for a Climbing Partner? Join our Climbing Club, hook up with more climbing partners and share tips and advice - 3 times-a-week at Boulders Indoor Climbing Centre

The Climbing Club is a great place to meet with new climbing partners, socialise, or even build your confidence early on in your climbing career.
The Climbing Clubs are run by the social secretaries, Syra, Rob and Phil who meet at 6.30pm in Boulders' Cafe on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. There's no need to book for this club and there's no extra cost, just your normal entrance fee.  To get involved just asking any member of staff to introduce you to one of the social secretaries.
To join in the Climbing Club you must be over 18 and able to use the centre unsupervised.

Good bits about this club

  • Standard entry rates
  • A social secretary on hand throughout the evening for tips and advice
  • Great opportunity to meet climbers at your own level of experience
  • Provides the perfect progression from the introduction to climbing course

A word from those who have tried and tested it

"I've been coming to the beginners club for 3-weeks now, since I finished the Introduction to Climbing Course. It's great because after I finished the course I was a bit nervous about coming back on my own, and going to the club meant that I met climbing partners who are at the same level as me. Also, the instructors are great and really help you out with a bit of coaching and support. I definitely recommend it to new climbers! It’s a real confidence builder." - Michelle, 34.

Meet the Social Secretaries

Monday: Syra

Syra hosts Boulders Climbing Club every Monday night
Syra says:
"I've been climbing on and off for about 10 years, but prior to entering the realm of Boulders last year, I hadn't climbed very much for about 6-7 years.
I got into climbing as I remember watching a programme on climbing and thinking, 'Wow, that looks so cool'! I also figured it was a good way to get over my fear of heights - Face your fears and all of that - And it worked!
One memorable climbing story I have is of Monsoon Malabar in Blacknor Central in Portland. It was cool because it was my first time sport climbing outdoors. It was quite exposed at times and had some difficult moves (for me anyway) and it was a 6a. I think there was a lot of adrenalin involved that day!
Boulders is very friendly and has a great social atmosphere. My training regime usually starts with a large latte and a chat! I do have a tendency to talk to random people, primarily because there's a free comfy chair on the table they're sitting at! With respect to climbing, there's a certain camaraderie amongst the climbers at Boulders, which I think is what creates the social buzz you feel when you walk through the doors from reception. I absolutely love being a social secretary, not least because it gives me a legitimate reason to spend the evening talking to everyone around the centre! On a serious note, when I first started climbing at Boulders, I didn't know anyone else to climb with (yes, I was billy-no-mates!) so I used to climb with the climbing clubs and through them I met so many lovely people, so it feels quite gratifying to give something back in my role as social secretary."

Wednesday: Rob

Rob hosts Boulders Climbing Club every Wednesday
Rob says:
"I have been climbing for 20 years.  I began climbing with my Dad and brother in Eugene, Oregon, in the US and soon began making regular trips to Smith Rock, the birthplace of American sport climbing.
I once retreated off of El Cap in May, after we woke up at the top of the fifth pitch of Triple Direct to huge pieces of ice raining past the porta-ledge.  Freezing rain, over night at the top, had accumulated a lot of ice and the sun was just hitting the face.  The various whizzing, whirring and whistling noises serenaded us, as deadly projectiles rained endlessly down the cliff around us. That is the fastest I have ever stuffed a sleeping bag!
I am a Post Graduate Research Student at Cardiff University, studying medical ethics.  I also do a fair bit of weight-training, surfing, white-water kayaking, kite-surfing, down-hill skateboarding and I also do some telemark skiing in the winter… all of which I do because they are so soothing and contemplative.  I play in a band, I love to cook and I’m also learning to ballroom dance.
Boulders has a lot of goods routes and the vibe is uniformly attitude free. The only obstacle for new people who would like to climb on a rope, is that they may be missing a climbing partner generally, or for a given evening.  The social secretary system painlessly solves that problem and feeds a free-flowing community of people who end up organising trips together to climb outside on weekends, and even out of the country together on longer trips.  I have been climbing long enough to know that climbing is ultimately about helping each other and having fun.  Being a social secretary allows me to employ this simple philosophy to help the climbing community. The satisfaction of seeing happy people making new friends and learning from each other is tremendous."

Thursday: Phil

Phil hosts Boulders Climbing Club every Thursday
Phil says:
"I've been climbing for almost two years now, after a work colleague persuaded me to try it. Nowadays I try to climb at least twice a week, getting outdoors whenever the weather permits! The season formally known as summer saw a little (but nowhere near enough!) outdoor climbing, including getting some long-awaited trad experience. Which brings me to the scariest climb I've done to date: After only ever having lead a handful of Trad climbs, and after my climbing partner retreated off a climb using my gear, I set about to retrieve it all - later wishing I hadn't! World War III Blues is a route in Pembroke I would rather forget.
Aside from climbing I'm a keen cyclist both road and mountain, making regular trips to all corners of the UK as often as possible. I've not yet ventured beyond home soil, but I'm keen to combine both mountain biking and climbing in sunnier climates - perhaps next year.
Boulders is a great climbing centre, as it cleverly manages to continually challenge it's more seasoned climbers, as well as creating a wonderfully friendly atmosphere in which to introduce new people to what is a fantastic sport. The Climbing Club evenings are a brilliant way of encouraging new, as well as existing Boulders climbers, to climb more and meet new people and friends along the way. It's through these evenings that I became a regular climber and it's great to now be a part of the Boulders team, getting more people to enjoy their climbing!"

Climbing More?

Now that you've got the hang of it and you've built up your nerves to join one of our social climbing clubs, you can climb more! That's exciting...but now what? If you're climbing more at Boulders, we're sure you're going to need a helping hand some times... maybe some chalk to get your hands of steel clinging to the walls or maybe you've made a buddy and fancy hitting yoga on a Tuesday night with them. Boulders on-line shop has all the climbing accessories and gear you'll need to help you to climb more!
